It had taken me nearly a year to figure out who I was really working for. This government organizationâDAIRâwas solely in the business of developing advanced technology, and most importantly, its research was not suitable for public knowledge. That was where DAWN came in. This small division within the organization served as its protector. The entire DAIR facility was enormous; it contained aircraft hangers and massive laboratories, dining halls and living quarters, offices and theatres for large meetings, and DAWNâs training facilities, where I had spent most of my last year. Although I knew the general layout of the entire place, I found myself discovering new and unusual places almost every day.
It was during one of these wanderings that I came face to face with her. I had been told to find Tolli and Donahue and tell them Agent Mallick needed to talk to them about Amelia, but since it wasnât urgent, I had decided to try a new route. My guess was that after six months of analysis, someone had finally figured out how to operate the mysterious contraption.
As I wandered through the massive complex, I found myself in a new hallway unfamiliar to me. I turned a sharp corner and came face to face with a russet-haired girl with implanted metal on her skin and an unmistakable green tint in her eyes. My heart stopped when I recognized her beautiful face. It looked different from what I remembered, but aside from the obvious changes, it only looked a little older. There was no denying her face belonged to my friend Wren.
I didnât know if I was overwhelmed with joy, grief, or shock. This was impossible. She returned my stare with her striking green eyes, and I inched closer.
âWren? Is it really you?â My words barely escaped from my lips.
She bit her lip uneasily as I walked up to her. I couldnât believe it. Slowly, I reached out and touched her cold metal-coated hands. It felt like a dream, and I stared at her face until recognition blossomed in her eyes. She smiled and nodded at me. âCass?â
I embraced her in a tight squeeze.
âI thought you were dead. I thought you were dead,â I began to sob into her shoulder. Glistening tears streamed down my face.
I stepped back to make sure I wasnât dreaming. Metal bled from her face and scaled down the back of her neck. She was wearing jeans and a hoodie, so I couldnât see how much metal was attached to her body. She clutched my hands as hard as I was clutching hers.
She gently spoke to me, âCass, Iâm all right. My parents didnât. . .they didnât survive the accident, but I did. My uncle saved me with these robotics, and Iâve lived here ever since. Heâs. . .heâs gone now too though.â
For a few moments, we were both speechless. My mind raced, thinking back on all those years I had spent grieving her death. I had missed her so much, but now I had my friend back.
